2019 – 2020 Annual Report

Each year, we produce an Annual Report to update on progress toward our community’s collective vision for downtown and the hard work of our team to make that vision a reality. This year, we continued our work keeping downtown clean and safe, planning for its future, advocating for critical downtown issues, and working with partners to create a thriving downtown that is welcoming for all.

COVID-19 Impact: Retail Survey

We surveyed 80 downtown businesses on the impact of COVID-19 in April 2020. The survey questions, designed to understand the current and future level of economic impact on the downtown business community, asked respondents how they are adapting and what, if any, aid they are receiving. Respondents include small businesses such as restaurants, salons, gyms and hair salons, as well as nonprofits and social services.

COVID-19 Impact: Downtown Office Market Survey

We recently surveyed downtown property owners, managers, developers and tenants to understand the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the downtown office market. We interviewed 11 individuals from 10 different companies representing more than 10.5 million square feet of downtown office space in 30 properties and more than 480 tenant companies.

The I-35 Corridor: ULI Advisory Services Report

We engaged the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) national advisory services to bring a panel of diverse experts to Austin in February 2020. They worked with the community, gathering input and ideas for the future of the I-35 corridor. Preliminary recommendations for the future of I-35 were presented at Huston-Tillotson University.

To prepare the Urban Land Institute’s expert advisory panel for their visit to study the I-35 corridor, the Downtown Alliance prepared a briefing book that served as a reference guide and high-level overview of the relevant economic, social and transportation opportunities and challenges facing the future of I-35.

Downtown Vision Report

The Downtown Austin Vision outlines the community’s collective vision of downtown Austin’s future and identifies long-term strategic priorities. Those will influence and inform all of our work for the next two decades. We are committed to bringing this vision to fruition through leadership, advocacy, investment and collaboration.

Parking Strategy

Our team developed the first-ever comprehensive inventory of downtown parking spaces which led to the formulation of nineteen short- and long-term improvement strategies. We're working to implement these strategies through partnerships and programs like the Affordable Parking Program.

The Value of Downtown

Downtown may make up a small share of Austin's land area but it has substantial economic importance. The Value of U.S. Downtowns and Center Cities report by the International Downtown Association links established downtowns and increased economic prosperity.
