Issues & Eggs: Intersection of Behavioral Health and Public Safety

On October 7, Downtown Austin Alliance hosted a continued conversation on mental health and public safety in our community. Since the launch of Travis County’s Mental Health Diversion Pilot in September 2024, significant work has been underway to connect individuals in crisis to appropriate care rather than cycling them through the criminal justice system.

At this follow-up event, we heard from local leaders and practitioners about the progress made since our initial discussion, including updates on the pilot’s impact, lessons learned, and next steps in the planning for a permanent Mental Health Diversion Center update.

Jeff Richardson, CEO of Integral Care, provided an overview of the mental health system in Travis County, including the scope of need, providers and services in the community. His presentation can be viewed here.

Speakers explored broader efforts to coordinate and improve access to mental health resources in Austin and Travis County, and how these initiatives are shaping safer and healthier outcomes for our community.

This conversation provided an opportunity to check in on the progress on the Mental Health Diversion Center Pilot, learn about early outcomes, and engage in what’s next for mental health solutions in Austin.

Panelists:
Jeff Richardson, CEO Integral Care
Judge Andy Brown, Travis County
Chief Lisa Davis, Austin Police Department

Moderator:
Dr. Desmar Walkes, M.D., FAASFM
