Peking Opera in Austin – Monkey King Fights the Skeleton Demon

Buddha’s Light International Association (BLIA) is thrilled to announce two upcoming days showcasing Peking Opera, a form of Chinese opera, in Austin at The Long Center: “Three Excerpts of Peking Opera,” a series of three performances, taking place Saturday, July 26, 7:30 p.m.; and “Monkey King Fights the Skeleton Demon,” taking place Sunday, July 27, 2:30 p.m. Presented by Taipei Li-Yuan and hosted by the Fo Guang Shan Xiang Yun Temple, Austin Chinese American Network and Texas CSA, this set of performances brings to Austin the spectacle of classic Chinese Peking Opera, which mixes regional styles with Beijing flair. With dramatic costumes, stylized moves, and unforgettable music, Peking Opera has action, romance, comedy, and acrobatics—all rolled into one. For information and tickets to the July 27 performance, see here: https://thelongcenter.org/events/monkey-king-fights-the-skeleton-demon/ The July 27 performance of “Monkey King Fights the Skeleton Demon” tells the story of Monk Tang and his disciples who journeyed west in search of the scriptures. At Bai-Ling Mountain, they encountered the Skeleton Demon, who transformed three times to deceive Monk Tang and kidnapped him to devour his flesh. Once again, the Monkey King came to the rescue!
