Volunteers Help Count Homeless Population through Annual Point in Time Count

February 3, 2020

This year, several members of our staff joined more than 900 volunteers for the annual Point in Time Count, a census of the homeless population of Austin/Travis County. Between 3:00 AM and 7:00 AM on Saturday morning, volunteers set out to designated sections across Travis County to count people experiencing homelessness. The data collected is used to secure federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This year marked the most volunteers to date and the first time in Austin that volunteers used a digital survey to streamline information collection to more accurately record the locations of where people are living.

The 2019 Point in Time Count found that there were 2,255 people experiencing homelessness in Travis County on a single night. Of those people, 1,169 were sheltered and 1,086 were unsheltered. Review 2019 Results
