Austin has the opportunity of a lifetime to transform one of the city’s biggest community barriers into a generational asset, improving mobility and creating new public spaces and community amenities through the Our Future 35 Cap and Stitch Design Program.

For the last six years, the Downtown Austin Alliance, in partnership with the City of Austin has led the visioning, engagement and planning work to support caps and stitches over the lowered I-35 highway in central Austin.

As a long-time steward of the Cap and Stitch visioning process, we remain committed to collaborating on solutions-based outcomes with all members of our community, as well as peer advocacy groups, partner associations and colleagues at the City, State and Federal levels.

The Downtown Austin Alliance’s Recommendations

Community input into the design process is vital to ensure the caps and stitches will be an asset to Austin for generations to come. Our organization’s expert planning/urban design staff and volunteer committees came together to share downtown priorities and recommendations for the Our Future 35 Cap and Stitch Program.

Where We Are Now

The City of Austin is currently conducting public outreach to determine the community’s preferences on the general uses and amenities for each cap. Planning for this must happen now so TxDOT can appropriately engineer the structures for  future proposed uses and amenities. Your input is important!

What Happens Next

Our Future 35 will incorporate the input received, aligning design strategies with the community-developed vision and goals and coordinate the advancement of the design with TxDOT, ensuring adequate structures are in place to support the community vision for each cap.

We now have the opportunity  to bridge Austin communities  that are divided by I-35 and provide equitable opportunities to all citizens. Together, we can create better, more inclusive infrastructure and communal assets that will serve Austin for years to come.
