How to Celebrate Father’s Day in Austin’s Downtown

June 8, 2021
Father's Day Picnic in Republic Square

Ask most dads, and they will tell you that while they enjoy the gifts on Father’s Day, they treasure the time spent with families, making memories. On this Father’s Day weekend, we invite you to spend time rediscovering downtown, whether you revisit your favorite spots or make new traditions. Here’s our list of favorite dad-friendly destinations to take the father figures in your life.

Waller Creek Boathouse

Head to Lady Bird Lake and enjoy some time at Waller Creek Boathouse. Rent a couple of kayaks, count the number of turtles you see and enjoy a drink and pastry on the patio at Alta’s overlooking the lake afterwards.

Gus’s Fried Chicken

Chances are you’ve heard rave reviews about Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. But have you made it down to try it for yourself? See if Dad agrees it lives up to its billing of “world famous” fried chicken. Grab some hot wings and sample all the sides and don’t forget to save room for one of their delicious pies!

BookPeople

BookPeople is a treasured locally-owned bookshop that’s a haven for bookworms. In addition to an ample selection of books from every imaginable genre, the store is chock full of great gifts. As the folks at the front for a recommendation, or browse the shelves together. Spend those summer days with your nose in a book and reconvene as a family for your own book club to continue the conversation.

Punch Bowl Social

Punch Bowl Social on Congress is a prime spot for family fun. With ping pong, darts, karaoke and a vintage arcade, there’s something to please everyone. Treat your dad to Sunday brunch, or any meal for that matter, and craft cocktails. After you get refueled and rehydrated, keep the celebration going with life-size Scrabble, duckpin bowling, or classic video games.

Texas Toy Museum

Have a collector in your household with an appreciation for classic toys? If so, the Texas Toy Museum is worth a visit. Hands-0n exhibits will entertain kids of all ages, and admission includes free-play on vintage arcade games. You can even sell or donate vintage toys to add to the museum’s collection.

Voodoo Donut

Let dad choose a sweet treat from Voodoo Donut‘s delicious assortment of colorful indulgences on the store’s trademark rotating display cases. Get enough to share and ride that sugar high while you vote on your favorite flavors.

Republic Square

Get out your picnic basket and blanket for a fun outing at Republic Square. Supplement your spread with delicious food and drinks from Salt and Time, which is conveniently located right in the park. Finish up with a game or Frisbee or catch. You can even bring along your pup for the fun!

Comedor

Snag a brunch reservation at critically-acclaimed downtown favorite Comedor and treat your dad to an excellent meal in a beautiful location Sunday morning. If you don’t get a brunch reservation, don’t worry. There is plenty to satisfy even the most discriminating foodie on the dinner menu.

Happy Father’s Day to everyone who plays the very important role of dad in someone’s life. We hope you are celebrated every day of the year.
