Sep 4-Dec 30 Arthur Miller + Victorian Photography
Harry Ransom Center for the Humanities, 21st & Guadalupe
(512) 471-8944, hrc.utexas.edu
The Harry Ransom Center has two important new exhibits opening this week:
The American playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005) articulated an unparalleled engagement with his historical moment through such plays as Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. He remained committed throughout his life to the politics of freedom. This devotion was never simplistic or topical, one of the reasons that his work has remained centerstage.
The exhibition - Rehearsing the American Dream: Arthur Miller's Theater - uses Miller's plays to explore conscience in its theatrical expression: as an intertwined and interdependent political and emotional life.
Sept 5, 7:00 p.m.
Exhibition curator Charlotte Canning leads a free gallery tour in the Ransom Center Galleries.
Sep 4-Dec 30 Dress Up: Portrait and Performance
in Victorian Photography
The Victorians embodied and embraced the dichotomy of fact and fiction. In this exhibit - Dress Up: Portrait and Performance in Victorian Photography - we find that masquerade, costume and performance all become elements of identity, regardless of whether the photographer's purpose is portraiture, documentary or fine art.
This exhibition offers two groups of images for comparison: the first group brings together images of people dressed to play someone else, while the second has images of people posing to reveal the self. In true Victorian fashion, however, all of these subjects are "playing" roles, so many images will occupy a middle ground between the extremes of identity and make-believe.
Both exhibitions will be on display at the Harry Ransom Center for the Humanities through December 30th.
