The UT Department of Theatre & Dance presents Slaughter City, a powerful play by Naomi Wallace based on real-life horrors in a modern day slaughterhouse (a la The Jungle and Fast Food Nation). Inspired by events surrounding a strike at the Fischer Meat Packing plant in Louisville, KY in 1993, Slaughter City is a riveting story that examines the abusive relationships between laborer and profiteer, man and woman, black and white. These events are being held in conjunction with the Harry Ransom Center Exhibit - The American Twenties, a time that's best remembered for its energetic spirit, heady exuberance and newfound freedoms. Jazz, country and blues grew from the musical mélange that emerged, as individuals experimented with new definitions of liberty and new models of expression. The Ransom Center recalls that era and its innovative music in the American '20s Music Series, a collaboration between the Center, Austin's live music community and the city's storied nightclubs and bistros.

This Spring, The University of Texas Press will publish Joe Ely's Bonfire of Roadmaps, an illustrated collection of writings from 1972 to the present. In association with UT Press, the Ransom Center will present showcase an installation of Ely;s artwork featured in the new book. For over three decades, famed Texas musician, Joe Ely, kept journals and created sketches and paintings of the people, places and things he saw as he toured across America and Europe. This installation will be nearly 50 feet long, and be like viewing a floating world or dreamscape that begins and ends in the flatlands (panhandle) of Texas, according to Ely.

Hundreds of kites and colors will fill the sky as thousands gather to welcome spring in at Zilker Park on "Kite Day". The Zilker Park Kite Festival, sponsored by The Exchange Club and the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department, is free and open to all. So grab a kite, some string and the kids to let out the kid in you! Everyone is welcome to come enjoy this grand celebration of the spring, even the family pets. Free parking and shuttles are available at state garage E at the corner of 17th and Colorado. Registration for competition starts at 11:00 a.m., and events start at 1:00 p.m. Participants are encouraged to compete with their homemade kites in the steadiest, highest angle, most unusual, smallest, and largest events. There are youth and adult categories and a 50-yard dash for kids between 7 and 12 years of age. Don't have a kite? No worries. Come make one at the special kite workshop. As participants move along the following route, a police escort will close cross streets and reopen them as the runners pass.

- North on Congress to 11th
- East on 11th to Trinity
- North on Trinity to 15th

Except for Congress, all streets will be partially closed. One or more lanes will remain accessible to traffic.

Because of the overlap between Celebrate Texas' event and the Ronald McDonald House event, one run will use the northbound lanes of Congress, and the other will use the southbound lanes.

Because of construction near Republic Square, the Farmers' Market is temporarily moving from Republic Square to Cesar Chavez. Until March of 2007, Cesar Chavez, between Lavaca and Congress, will be closed from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Note: Next week the Austin Farmer's Market returns to it's original location at Republic Square.

Mar 10 Erection of tower crane

Colorado Street, between W. 2nd and W. Cesar Chavez, will be closed while construction crews working on the development at 101 Colorado set up a large crane. The closure will begin on Saturday morning, and the street will reopen late Sunday night.
