Featured Event

Jan 20-Jul 28 The American Twenties
Harry Ransom Center, 21st & Guadalupe
(512) 471-8944, hrc.utexas.edu

Profound cultural and social change occurred during the 1920s in this country; it was a decade of ambiguities, contradictions, contrasts and conflicts. In the decade's struggle to define the future of America, a plethora of issues were argued and fought out in poetry, novels, political tracts, music and the movies. Issues of race, religion and revolution were paramount followed by those of love, sex and gender. Questions of the primacy of labor and capital were particularly fraught and the benefits of socialism, communism, anarchism and capitalism were openly debated. Fundamentalists and experimentalists clashed in many areas of human endeavor. Through these, the idea of the "Modern" was crystallized and the "American" century born.

This exhibition is an exploration of that decade through the literature and art that was to become quintessentially American and quintessentially modern. Themes explored in this all-gallery exhibition of materials drawn from the Ransom Center's collections. The Center's commemoration of its 50th anniversary year begins in 2007 with the opening of this exhibition, one of many programs planned in a year dedicated to "Celebrating the Imagination." The exhibition is guest-curated by Rodney Phillips.

Jan 18-Mar 11 Present Laughter
Zachary Scott Theatre, 1510 Toomey Rd.
(512) 476-0541, zachscott.com

This semi-autobiographical, madcap farce is one of Noel Coward's finest and funniest comedies. Stylishly attired and devastatingly charismatic, Garry Essendine is a famous, self-dramatizing actor who never met a mirror he didn't like. He teeters reluctantly towards middle age, while everyone who encounters him is completely infatuated with him. The stage is set for a battle of glittering egos as the ruthless, razor-sharp-tongued Essendine takes on an admiring young playwright, his tart-tongued secretary, his business partners, an hilariously acerbic ex-wife, and an hours-old tryst. You get the picture, and just know the play is even more entertaining than this description!

Jan 19, 21, 27, 29 Waiting for the Barbarians
Austin Lyric Opera
Bass Concert Hall, 23rd & Robert Dedman
(512) 472-5992, austinlyricopera.org

Philip Glass' Waiting for the Barbarians is a two act opera with libretto by Christopher Hampton based on Nobel laureate John M. Coetzee's novel of the same name from a poem by Constantine Cavafy. The work is a startling allegory of the conflict between oppressors and oppressed. It's the moving story of a loyal Magistrate of the Empire who witnesses the unjust treatment of barbarian prisoners and commits a compassionate act of rebellion that brands him an enemy of the state. Jan 20-Mar 4 The Siren's Song
Arthouse at the Jones Center, 700 Congress
(512) 453-5312, arthousetexas.org

The Sirens' Song is an exhibition about painting, artists and one of the oldest and most powerful forms of communication: the story.

In the last few years, there has been a resurgence of interest among artists in storytelling, particularly with the use of allegory and narrative. By focusing on the work of Seth Alverson, Gilad Efrat, Joey Fauerso, Ali Fitzgerald, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Kirk Hayes, Philip Maysles, David McGee, Xiomara De Oliver, Vincent Valdez, William Villalongo, and Hilary Wilder, this exhibition seeks to understand how artists employ storytelling as one of their primary expressive devices.

The story is not an end in itself, but rather a means of meditating on personal memories and collective experiences or to comment on history and current events. In the process, these artists juxtapose the real and the imagined, non-fiction and fiction, and representation and abstraction.

The exhibition title was inspired by the work of novelist and literary critic Maurice Blanchot, who described the myth of the Sirens as the archetypal story - a story about stories. This beautiful exhibit looks at the poetic and structural nature of stories as expressed through visual art. Opening Reception: January 19, 8:00-10:00 p.m. Artist's Talk by Curator Kelly Baum, January 20, 3:00 p.m.
