A city becomes a canvas. Street corners transform into galleries and storefronts into stages. A festival of art, imagination and creativity spreads across downtown Austin. First Night Austin 2007.

Bring the kids and bring in the new year in an entirely new way! You'll enjoy music, interactive hands-on activities, stage performances and visual arts galore. This is a community-wide celebration that invites you to celebrate your community!

Schedule of Events:

2:00 - 5:30 p.m. - The Family Festival features activities geared primarily for younger audiences such as the Hip Hop Block Party, Chinese Yo Yo Troupe, Robotic technology, Clickety Cloggers and more!

5:30 - 6:30 p.m. - Grand Procession to City Hall is no ordinary parade - with Cuban stiltwalkers, a giant grocery cart, cardboard ice cream truck puppet theatre, drummers and dancers and a festival of flags.

7:00 p.m. - Activities geared primarily for older audiences arranged by artform - Dance, Music, Performance.

12:00 a.m. - Finale to welcome in 2007, a spectacle you won't soon forget!

Particularly Cool Stuff

"Art is Street" - Cesar Chavez St. becomes a community canvas, and you're invited to leave your chalk mark on the bridge!

"The I of Texas" - a fabulous film/video event that projects the "eyes" of Texas (maybe yours) onto the Water Tower.

You'll want to dress for Texas' wonderful December weather and remember to wear comfortable shoes. Free parking will be available throughout downtown and Capital Metro will provide free 'Dillo service from the state parking garages at Trinity to the event starting at 1:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve.

If you attended last year's inaugural event you know how great it was. If you missed it, you 'll definitely want to make this your "first" First Night Austin!

Once a year all of the improvisers in Austin come together for one gigantic show in celebration of the city we live in and the art form we love. Same Year's Eve Improv Extravaganza throws together players from over 17 local troupes in a spectacular exhibition of improv comedy. The evening includes games, scenes and long-form musicals based on audience suggestions. After the show there's a free party with food and drink. Tickets are $10 and available online at hideouttheatre.com or 1/2 hour before the show at the box office.

New Year's Eve can always be murder - with the Capital City Mystery Players at Spaghetti Warehouse! The show is A New Year's Eve Cruise Ship Crime, set in the luxurious restaurant on board the largest luxury ship afloat the fabulous Titanium, under the flag of Carnivore Cruise Lines. During the evening's festivities, including an audience participation Conga line, a valuable piece of jewelry disappears, followed by a mysterious murder. Whodunit? The package price per couple is only $119 (all-inclusive) for the dinner, show and a bottle of wine. The 10:00 p.m. late show goes right up to midnight and ends with a champagne toast.

Austin's premiere improv comedy troupe, The Heroes of Comedy, brings in the New Year with an enchanted evening of improv games, scenes and a champaign toast at midnight. You'll get chills as you listen to the Canterbury Bells of St. David's at this week's free holiday concert in St. David's historic sanctuary. The mission of this project is to create
a model of a for-profit business collaborating with non-profit organizations to enrich the lives of those in need by providing hope through jobs for kids at risk and support for feeding the homebound elderly and youth. Please join in this project to help Austin's kids at risk and support the feeding of thousands of Austin's homebound and elderly while you give yourself world-class sweetness@

Capital Metro will run a shuttle from the state parking garages at 14th & Trinity to the Zilker Park Trail of Lights. Two lanes of San Jacinto, between MLK Boulevard and E. 13th St., and two lanes of Trinity, between E. 12th and E. 15th Sts. will be closed each evening from 6:00 p.m. until midnight.
