F8 Art Gallery pops the cork on 2006 with "New Year: New Faces." This bang of a show opens Saturday - 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Featured are four fresh, emotionally charged takes on the human figure. Ethan Diehl's paintings (image seen) of engaging women are created entirely of miniscule squares. Israel-born painter David Harouni, who now resides in New Orleans, brings bright, kingly self-portraits. Richard Griffin lingers on cast-off brides and their intimate atmosphere of loss in his fine art photographs. Kyla Schackelford renders classic figures in oil in her private portrait sessions. It's champaigne for the eyes! Exhibit runs through February 11th.

Lora Reynolds Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Francesca Gabbiani, entitled "Wonderland." Gabbiani is known for her often large-scale, extraordinarily intricate, cut-paper collages with acrylic and gouache. The works are intensely beautiful; they seduce with their meticulous nature and eerie sense of deja vu. They'll be contributed to the Austin Responds Wall. Find out what you're in for during this really neat experience at christojeanneclaude.net. Then come hear people's diverse experiences and learn more about the exhibition that's coming to Austin Museum of Art (AMOA) on January 28 and Christo and Jeanne-Claude's talk on March 30. AMOA is are inviting the community to share stories about the artists' projects. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work has connected to Austin (they presented a talk in 1979 at AMOA-Laguna Gloria!) and the art world (The Gates was one world's most memorable art events of 2005!) and they welcome you to connect with this work and with others.

Continuing the Dream is an event-filled three days to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's legacy, while uplifting diversity and multi-culturalism in Austin. The March kicks off at 9:00 a.m. with a short program at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas campus. Then the march is on to the south steps of the Capitol for brief rally, before continuing to Huston-Tillotson College, where exciting activities are planned. This year's Grand Marshall is State Representative Dawnna Dukes. The Heritage Council is planning a Cultural Festival which will begin after the March and last until 3:00 p.m., including all types of vendors and local musical artists to make the 2006 Celebration the best ever! Please plan to join the festivities.

In the grand, and now year-round tradition of the Austin Farmers' Market, downtown has another open air event for art lovers. The West 6th Street Artists' Market is a festive outdoor art fair, featuring a variety of work by independent artists from Austin and Central Texas. Open every Sat. & Sun. 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. They are dedicated to offering a market of diversity encompassing the many mediums of art and design practiced in Austin, while preserving the individual artistic integrity of these mediums. Street Closings

Jan 13 - Jan 18 Congress Ave/Riverside Intersection Reconstruction

Beginning Friday, January 13 at 6:00 p.m., Congress Ave. will be reduced to one lane northbound and one lane southbound. (Following an identical traffic control plan from last weekend) while crews reconstruct the intersection of Congress Ave. and Riverside Dr.

Westbound traffic on Riverside Dr. entering the Congress Ave. intersection will be detoured to Barton Springs Rd. This traffic pattern will remain in place, until 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17.

Motorists should be prepared for Delays in that area including lane reductions and detours. Taking alternate routes, such as South First and Cesar Chavez, is recommended.

From 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., W. 4th St. will be closed between Guadalupe and San Antonio for the Austin Farmers Market.

Jan 16 Martin Luther King Day Parade & Celebration

The parade will start at the MLK Statue on the UT campus at 9:45 a.m. and go south on San Jacinto Blvd., west on MLK Jr. Blvd., and south on Congress Ave. to the Capitol grounds.

At 10:45 a.m., the parade will move from the Capitol south grounds, east on 11th St. to Chalmers Ave. The parade will end on Chalmers Ave., west of Huston-Tillotson College.

Due to the expected number of participants, roads and intersections on the parade route will be will be completely closed until the procession passes.

Expect traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to be impacted from approximately 9:45 a.m. until 10:15 a.m., and traffic on E. 11th St. to be impacted from approximately 10:45 a.m. until 11:30 a.m..
