Featured Event

Jan 7, 9 Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk
Bass Concert Hall, 23rd & Robert Dedman
(512) 472-5992, austinlyricopera.org

An opera so vividly sensual it was banned from Shostakovitsh's homeland for 30 years! Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk follows the downward spiral of the young bride, Katerina, and her tale of unfilled love.

Murder, banishment and betrayal complete the circle of passion that lives and dies in the hearts of these classic lovers.

This exciting new production will kick off the year-long regional celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Shostakovitsh!

Support this outstanding company throughout the year. Artistic Director Richard Buckley's 2005/06 season includes three spectacular and provocative operas, two all-time favorites and a stunning new production of a 20th century tour de force.

Jan 6-Feb 26 Metal & Stone:
A photographic Exploration

Umlauf Sculpture Garden, 605 Robert E. Lee Road
(512) 445-5582, umlaufsculpture.org

Opening January 6th is a fascinating new look at the many splendors of Umlauf Sculpture Garden. Austin photographer Matthew Magruder has been exploring Austin's public gardens for the last five years, using antique cameras and 19th century printing methods. For the last year, Magruder has focused his lens on the Umlauf Sculpture Garden, using several different large format cameras to make a series of handmade platinum/palladium prints of the sculptures and landscape. "The immediate environment of every sculpture changes throughout the year, as the plant life evolves, changes and grows, with the light and shadows around each piece changing as the leaves grow in, thicken, and finally fall from the trees." Magruder's final prints are the same size as the large negatives in his antique cameras. Each print is individually hand made on cotton rag paper, and each are unique. Admission to the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, including this new temporary exhibit, METAL & STONE: A Photographic Exploration, is $3.50 for Adults, $2.50 for Seniors, $1 for Students. Children under 6 and Museum Members are free.

James Housefield, In his essay about her work, James Housefield says, "Water and its traces course through the art of Liz Ward. Water's fluidity recurs throughout the content and form of her work. At first glance, the drawings and paintings gathered within this exhibit may appear to be diverse examples of biomorphic abstraction. Beyond this relation to traditions of modern art, however, the works in Aqueous cohere as a clearly unified series of meditations on the nature of water, and on water's presence in and around us."
