In a new exhibit, 22 to Watch: New Art in Austin, the Austin Museum of Art turns the spotlight on emerging and less-known artists from Central Texas whose imagination and spirited creativity stretch the boundaries of contemporary art.

You'll see twenty-two of Austin's hottest new artists working in such media as film, painting, embroidery, printmaking, sculpture, interactive electronics, drawing, and color photography, as well as installation art incorporating such diverse materials as Post-it® notes, comic books, felt, wood, vinyl lettering, metal, cardboard, postcards and Astroturf.

This is the second in a series of triennial exhibitions, organized by the Austin Museum of Art and made possible by Chris Mattsson and John McHale and Texas Commission on the Arts.

Due to popular demand, the Scottish Rite Theatre has extended its run of Aladdin for two more performances. Why is it such a hit? Comedy, suspense, audience participation in helping Aladdin defeat the Evil Magician and utter amusement. Aladdin is the ideal theatrical experience for youth, especially children ages 4-13. Two Hoots and a Holler, a Central Texas rock-n-roll favorite for 20 years, has been named "Best Roots-Rock Band" seven times at the Austin Chronicle Music Awards. Joining them for this session of Howlin' at the Moon, will be Misspent Youth, chosen as "Best Kid Band of the Year" at the Austin Music Awards. Mau Mau Chaplains are seen as "the founding fathers of Austin reggae playing Roots reggae." Head down to City Hall this Friday for live music at noon on the Plaza! For those of you who can't make it, the concert will be broadcast live on cable Channel 6. Free parking. Food available.

The Austin Symphony Big Band brings the 2005 Season of Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park to a swingin' close this Sunday. These summer evening concerts have been presented to the community with the support of the Hartman Foundation, Starbucks Coffee and media sponsors, Austin American-Statesman, Time Warner Cable/News 8 Austin. This project is funded in part by the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division and by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The Downtown Austin Alliance wishes to thank the Austin Symphony and these generous contributors for bringing Wooldridge Square Park alive with music and families this summer.

Aug 19 Great American Weight Loss Challenge

The Great American Weight Loss Challenge is visiting Austin's Wooldrige Park as part of a 75-city, cross-country tour that's encouraging people to sign up for a 12-week plan that provides the tools to lose weight in a healthy way. Mayor Will Wynn will be out at 11:00 a.m. to kick-off events and declare August 19th Milk-Your Diet Day in Austin. Events include: on-site sign up for the Great American Weight Loss Challenge (the city with the most participants will win $25,000 for health related improvements and be featured in a "Milk Mustache" ad to run nationally in Ladies Home Journal); free health assessments; sampling of milk from local dairy processors; fitness tips from local Curves representatives and souvenir "Milk Mustache" photos. You'll want to milk this free (11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.) event for all it's worth. Bring the whole family!

Specializing in urban initiatives and Downtown retail environments, Midge McCauley brings 25 years experience as a specialist in retail consulting for urban projects, business improvement districts, and community development operations.

You'll also meet Linda Asaf, the Alliance's retail recruiter. Learn how Ms. Asaf will be recruiting new retailers to add to the Congress Avenue mix by working closely with real estate brokers, property owners and existing retailers on Congress Avenue.
