May 28 Annie Leibovitz: American Music

She's one of the most sensitive portrait photographers in the world, and the Austin Museum of Art has assembled a magnificent multi-media exhibit of Annie Leibovitz's best work.

American Music provides intimate glimpses of musical icons as they live, work and play. You'll peer through her lens at the most influential performers of America's traditional and popular music. She has captured her subjects in their homes, cars and churches to tell revealing stories about more than seventy American music legends.

American Music will be accompanied by an audio tour of the exhibition narrated by Annie Leibovitz, as well as iPod listening stations with recordings of the featured musicians. Waterloo Records and Video has assembled these audio portraits.

Admission for adults is $5; seniors/students - $4; children under 12 and Museum members - Free. Tuesday tours are only $1 and First Saturday, you pay what you wish.

Make this a summer vacation activity to give your kids a rich exposure to and experience of American Music. The exhibit runs through August 7.

At this week's Thursday Noontime Concert, Chaski performs Latin American folk music that features traditional instruments, colorful costumes, cultural insight, Andean dances, and audience participation.

This fun, eclectic pop band packs houses wherever it performs. Pink Martini joins the Austin Symphony Orchestra to bring refreshing nuances to its pop renditions of classical, jazz and Latin music. Beginning its third summer season, the sound of music returns to Wooldridge Square Park on Sundays, starting this week. These free, early evening ensemble concerts bring together ardent enthusiasts and unwitting attendees alike, just as similar events did in town centers years ago. Music begins at 7:30 p.m. The Hartman Foundation Concerts in the Park are presented by the Austin Symphony Orchestra.

Painter Charles Mary Kubricht distills time and nature into monumental visions of one of the planet's most spectacular environments. While rafting through the Grand Canyon, she captured the changing light and geology of the journey by using her digital camera as an "electronic sketchbook." Balancing representation with abstraction, these richly patterend colored fields carry the viewer down the river, through a day, and past epochs of geologic time.

Children experience the magic of the arts at Children's Day Art Park, an exciting free summer program featuring local musicians, dancers, storytellers, magicians, mimes and crafts people. Youngsters can visit the Instrumental Petting Zoo where they can see, touch and try to play the instruments, talk to symphony musicians and hear them play their instruments, see a Ballet Folklorico, hear a country western band, follow a real pied piper along the Lemonade Trail to the Magic Oak Tree and try their hands at different art projects under the Art Tent. This week showcases the beauty of Roy Lozano's Ballet Folklorico. Cost is a mere $.50 per Child, and adults are free when accompanied by child.

The Capital of Texas Triathlon will take place on Memorial Day, Monday, June 30. The event will start at Auditorium Shores and end at the Capitol. The affected streets will be:

Congress at 11th St. to Barton Springs;
San Jacinto at E. 17th St. to E. 11th St.;
E. 11th St. at Congress to San Jacinto;
Brazos at E. 4th St. to Cesar Chavez;
Cesar Chavez at Brazos to Austin High School;
S. 1st St. W. Cesar Chavez to W. Riverside;
Dawson Rd. at W. Riverside to Barton Springs;
W. Riverside at S. 1st St. to S. Lamar;
Barton Springs at S. Congress to Riverside; and
E. 4th St. at Congress to Brazos.

All streets on the route will be completely closed except E. 4th St., Brazos, E. Cesar Chavez and Barton Springs. On those streets, one lane will be closed. For more information on the race, go to www.captextri.com.

6/2-6/5 Republic of Texas Bike Rally

On Friday, June 3rd, the Republic of Texas Bike Rally will roll into downtown. A parade of nearly 50,000 motorcycles will enter downtown and park on Congress Avenue.

Between 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m., Congress Avenue will be completely closed from 2nd St. to 11th St., as will all side streets one block east and west of Congress Avenue from 3rd St. to 11th St.
