Feb 24: Grand Art Opening at Austin's New City Hall

Celebrate the generosity and talent of 70 local visual artists who have contributed their work for the first annual exhibition in Austin's great new public space for the enjoyment of all. This multi-media event will spotlight and thank the many talented visual artists who are sharing their work with the community by participating in this unique loan program and exhibition.

This program is the initiative of the City's Cultural Arts Division of the Economic Growth and Redevelopment Office.

Come celebrate Austin and learn more about the artists. Enjoy food from Whole Foods and music by Christian Fernandez. The Grand Art Opening happens 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Please plan to be a part of this community celebration.

These tales will have your teeth pinned back in a wide, fox-like grin. FOXTALES, an award-winning, internationally acclaimed musical (for kids), follows the foibles of a fox as he discovers the fables of Aesop. Though designed to stimulate a child's imagination, FOXTALES amuses adult children too. These Saturday shows run through March 19.

L.A.Theatre Works performs Graham Greene's play The Living Room in radio-theater style. Really rich entertainment! Feb 25: Traditional Music Almost Lost Forever

The Taliban nearly destroyed the traditional sounds of Afghanistan. But the music survived and lives on with the award-winning "Ensemble Kaboul" and "Mahwash." You'll experience a multi-ethnic blend of Indian, Persian and Arabic music woven together in a traditional Afghan sound that was almost lost forever.

Gallery Watch & Museum Musings

Artist Community Needs Community's Help

Guadalupe Arts Center artists were devastated by the fire that consumed the building in January. There are several ways the community can help. The Austin Visual Arts Association is coordinating several efforts: Donations of art supplies can be dropped off at the AVAA building and monetary donations are made out to AVAA and can be sent to P.O. Box 13313, Austin, TX 78711-3313.

An Artists' Spring Cleaning Party fundraising event is being held 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at AVAA headquarters on March 19. Good way to express your support.

Finally, the artists are looking for affordable space to rent - possibly warehouse - to resume their work. If you have or know of any availabilities, please contact Harold McMillian of DiverseArts at hmcmillan@diversearts.org or give him a call at (512) 477-9438.

Galveston-based Eric Schnell develops cumulative sculptural installations that weave between drawings, found objects and images. Peace Officer's Memorial Foundation 5K Fun Run
Feb 26: 8:30 a.m.

In conjunction with this run, 13th between Trinity and San Jacinto, will be closed from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. From there, runners will take the following course:

- West on 13th to San Jacinto
- South on San Jacinto to 2nd
- West on 2nd to Lavaca
- North on Lavaca to MLK.
- East on MLK to San Jacinto
- South on San Jacinto to 12th, and
- West on 12th to the finish on the Capitol grounds.

One lane on each street will be closed, with the exception of San Jacinto between 13th and 2nd - on this portion of the route, two lanes will be closed.
