Q: What is the Downtown Austin Alliance?
A: We are a nonprofit organization that works with key downtown stakeholders – such as property owners, retailers, residents, government leaders, and community organizations – to advance our collective vision for the future of downtown Austin.
Q: How do We define “downtown?”
A: The Downtown Austin Plan defines downtown as Lady Bird Lake to the south, Martin Luther King Boulevard to the north, I-35 to the east and Lamar Boulevard to the west.
We provide advocacy and direct services to the boundary within that area defined by the Downtown Public Improvement District (PID). The PID is roughly bordered by Lady Bird Lake to the south, Martin Luther King Boulevard to the north, I-35 to the east and San Antonio Street to the west. It also includes some properties south of Lady Bird Lake to Riverside Dr.
Q: How are we funded?
A: The Downtown Austin Alliance’s primary source of funding comes from a special assessment on privately owned properties within the Downtown Public Improvement District. The PID assesses properties at 10 cents per $100 valuation after the first $500,000 in value.
Q: How specifically does the downtown alliance serve downtown?
A: We are a full-time advocate for downtown supporting initiatives that increase the value and vitality of the area including mobility, streetscapes, economic development, arts and culture, housing, parks, public order, and quality of life issues.
In addition, we provide direct services for downtown including:
- Downtown Ambassador crew (clean, safe, and hospitality team)
- Retail recruitment services
- Production of the annual Holiday Sing-Along and Downtown Stroll
Q: Who are the members of the Downtown
A: Downtown property owners with property valued over $500,000 are automatically assessed members, and any other Austin organizations or individuals are welcomed to join. Click here for our membership levels and benefits.
Q: Can I get involved with the Downtown alliance even if I’m not a member?
A: Yes. We host educational breakfast meetings – called Issues and Eggs – to help the community learn about hot topics affecting downtown. Sign up for our newsletter to learn about the next meeting.
Q: Is the Downtown Austin Alliance part of
the City of Austin?
A: No, the Downtown Austin Alliance is an independent 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization. As an independent contractor managing the Downtown Public Improvement District, the Downtown Alliance is subject to the provisions of the City's policy concerning goals for minority women-owned businesses (MBE/WBE). We have a good working relationship with the City. This enables the organization to work as an advocate for downtown as well as work through problems quickly for its constituents, the downtown property and business owners.
Q: Can the Downtown Austin Alliance resolve
problems with the City of Austin, the Austin Police
Department and/or the Fire Department?
A: Yes. We pride ourselves on our advocacy role and ability to work with the various City departments. While we can't solve all problems, often Downtown Alliance staff know just who to call to get a job done quickly or get a question answered.
Q: Can the Downtown Austin Alliance make rules
A: No, only the Austin City Council can make rules for downtown. We have facilitated many community stakeholder groups to study issues affecting downtown. Out of these have come recommendations to the City Council for new ordinances, and revisions to existing ordinances.
Q: How does the Downtown Austin Alliance help
A: The Downtown Austin Alliance's staff participates in all planning initiatives that affect downtown’s business climate. This includes plans for everything from regional transportation systems to neighborhood redevelopment projects. We act as a liaison between businesses and policy makers to ensure all voices are heard and plans promote positive growth of downtown’s retail, commercial, and residential markets.

Q: Where can I find a meeting space downtown?
A: The Downtown Austin Alliance has compiled a list of meeting spaces here. Please contact each venue directly – we do not book meetings on their behalf.
Q: Who should I call when problems arise
A: Call 911 immediately for response to all crimes in progress. This includes everything from reporting emergencies to low-level, public order offenses such as people sleeping in doorways, sitting or lying on sidewalks, aggressive panhandling and more.
Call 311 promptly to report all crimes that have already occurred – or crimes not currently in progress. This may include property crimes or vandalism, graffiti, crimes against people, public order problems and more.

When you are in doubt about where to call, call 911 and let the trained operator determine how to route your call and deploy appropriate resources.
Q: Can the Downtown Austin Alliance tell me how much
money I owe in PID Assessment?
A: No, The City of Austin collects assessments paid to the Public Improvement District along with taxes paid to the City itself. Questions should be directed to email@example.com. Someone will reply to all inquires within 2 days.
