The Long Center presents an evening with Neil deGrasse Tyson, Tuesday, January 16 in Dell Hall with his lecture “Cosmic Collisions.”

Join us for an evening with an intergalactic personality who needs no introduction—Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, award-winning astrophysicist, author, and favored science “it-guy.” For this Austin engagement Dr. Tyson will deliver his lecture “Cosmic Collisions,” focusing on all things that go bump in the night (and in the day). Yes, the universe wants to kill you: On occasion these collisions—asteroid and comet impacts on Earth—can render life extinct. Together, we’ll learn why and how this happens and what we are doing about it.

In addition to dozens of professional publications and becoming a fixture in both our scientific and pop culture in his own right, Dr. Tyson has written, and continues to write for the public. For five seasons, beginning in the fall of 2006, Dr. Tyson appeared as the on-camera host of PBS-NOVA’s spinoff program NOVA ScienceNOW—an accessible look at the frontier of all the science that shapes the understanding of our place in the universe. Dr. Tyson is the recipient of eighteen honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given by NASA to a non-government citizen.
