Accessibility Internet Rally for Austin (AIR-Austin) Registration
Knowbility is proud to be hosting our 12th year of AIR, the Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR). AIR is an annual web design competition that increases awareness of the tools and techniques that make the Internet accessible to everyone- including people with disabilities.
Since 1998, AIR-Austin has strengthened the capacity of more than 265 non-profit organizations that focus on health, human services, the environment, the arts and more in Central Texas by providing them with professional websites (or redesigns of current sites) that are designed to be accessible to everyone – including people with disabilities. (http://www.knowbility.org/air-austin/) How it works:
Teams of technology professionals learn from Knowbility experts about how and why to implement design techniques that allow Web sites to be accessed by people with disabilities. Meanwhile, non-profit organizations sign up online to be selected as one of the non-profits to receive a new accessible Web site. Non-profit participants, usually two to four representatives per agency, attend training in outreach efforts, crafting their message, and the best uses of the Internet to serve their constituencies. Both non-profit and for-profit participants attend disability awareness workshops. Once everyone has been trained, groups of Web designers and developers are matched to representatives of a local non-profit organization to create the AIR-Austin teams. Why this is important:
The need to access information and services over the Web or using other technologies cannot be exaggerated in our society today. Children with disabilities can benefit from advances in telecommunications as they strive to stay up with the rest of their grade level and make the most of their educational opportunities. Youth with disabilities can participate in online educational, social, and consumer activities previously closed to them. Adults with disabilities can benefit from computer-based employment and telecommuting. In order to realize this potential, information technology must be accessible to people with disabilities.
Just as ramps and curb-cuts create access to physical space, there are tools and techniques that allow visitors with disabilities access to online places. For example, a blind visitor to a Web site may use a text-to-speech device called a screen reader. If this assistive technology encounters an image, which many Web designers use for navigation and other critical functionality including shopping carts, there is no way for the device to render the meaning of the image into words. However, by using a small bit of code to insert alternative text, the programmer can provide information that will not change what the sighted user sees but will help the blind user to navigate and get information from the site.
The same is true for access keys for mobility-impaired users who do not use a mouse, deaf users who cannot receive aural information such as a song or a bit of dialogue, and color blind users who cannot respond to color-coded signals. There are “electronic curb-cuts” to address all of these impairments, but only if the programmer is aware of them and how to use them effectively. AIR delivers this knowledge to the community in a series of training workshops that also serve to engage tech sector volunteers in the vitality of the Austin community. In the early 90’s, America was hungry for sensational stories delivered by programs like Hard Copy and A Current Affair. From Amy Fisher to Lorena Bobbitt, it seemed that every state had their own crazy to throw into the mix and Texas didn’t want to get left out. In steps Wanda Holloway who, in order to provide her daughter with the best possible shot at making her cheer squad, enlists her brother-in-law to kill off a rival student. In what had to be the most sensational story of its time comes the award-winning dark comedy whose title says it all.

Presented in partnership with the Butler School of Music Texas Performing Arts invites you to push the envelope of new music with pioneering composer and video artist Jean Piché. Since the early 1970s, he was one of the first composers to employ emerging digital audio technologies in a cycle of fixed media works acknowledged as seminal to the form. His works cross every genre of electro-acoustics but now center on video-music in which electronic visuals become an extension of musical discourse. His work aims for poetic expression beyond any avowed formalism, while alternately described as confounding, colorful and virtuosic. “Like pure musique-concrète in which all the sounds emerge from recordings of the real world, Piché‘s stunning visual images are derived from the rich movement and color from his unique video recordings. The three screen projections synchronized with his very original musical style are stunning and totally captivating. I believe that his video-music is indeed a new and very powerful genre.” BRUCE PENNYCOOK, UT BUTLER SCHOOL OF MUSIC PROFESSOR IN COMPOSITION

The Last Cargo Cult (Texas Premiere) Created and performed by Mike Daisey Directed by Jean-Michele Gregory
Presented in partnership with Fusebox Festival and the Department of Theatre and Dance
Hailed by The New York Times as “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation,” Mike Daisey’s extemporaneous monologues skewer, illuminate, and ultimately celebrate our world with equal parts humor and heart. Monologues like Tongues Will Wag, If You See Something Say Something and How Theater Failed America have become classic staples in Daisey’s repertoire.
Performing his critically acclaimed monologue, The Last Cargo Cult, Daisey masterfully tells the story of his journey to a remote South Pacific island whose people worship America and its “cargo.” Set against an examination of the international financial crisis that gripped the globe, this narrative confronts the financial system that dominates our world. Part adventure story and part memoir, Daisey explores each culture to unearth a human truth between the seemingly primitive and achingly modern.
“One of the elite performers in the American theater…with an effortlessness that comes from years of spinning tales, he imbues this trip with the punch of the first explosion of an action movie.” NEW YORK TIMES

As a visual artist, if you can’t create high-quality files that faithfully reproduce your original art, you can’t compete. If you’re an artist who submits your art for exhibit entries, for fine art printing, for web use, for gallery submissions, for business card printing and more, you’ve probably struggled with Photoshop to provide your art in the requested formats. That’s because Photoshop is complex, amazing, and let’s face it, daunting. Most Photoshop owners use it for just a few tasks, without really having a firm grip on the files they’re creating. Jann Alexander, graphic designer, photographer and fine artist shows you just the three things you need to master in Photoshop to create proper files for web, for fine art printing and for commercial printing presses: Colorspace, Resolution and File Formats. Get comfortable making your own Photoshop files in this workshop by:
* understanding Colorspace, so you’ll how to manage color for the best output * learning which Resolution you’ll need for various end uses, and know the difference between ppi and dpi * find out which File Formats you need to use in most situations * getting personal attention from the instructor as you go through the steps in Photoshop, gaining the confidence that * you, too, can master the three Photoshop secrets artists need to succeed
